Starting April strong, and we’re skipping the tricks altogether. This week was full of new and explosive movie trailers, proving to be a bounty that we should treat ourselves to.

Here are this week’s trailers that you need to watch and mark on your calendars ASAP.

Supergirl

DC Studios

On Tuesday, DC Studios released a new trailer for Supergirl, the titular character played by Milly Alcock. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the story follows an unlikely collaboration between Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, and Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) to avenge her father’s death.

The latest trailer shows Krypto poisoned by the villain Kren of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), and Kara taking on a John Wick-style persona when told that her dog has three days to live. Jason Momoa as Lobo is also at her side.

Supergirl is getting a theatrical release on June 26.

I Love Boosters

NEON

Neon released the first full-length trailer for I Love Boosters, a crime comedy directed by Boots Riley eight years after Sorry to Bother You (2018). A shoplifting mayhem is orchestrated by Corvette (Keke Palmer) and her criminal crew. They justify their shoplifting deeds as a means of redistributing wealth, but the story takes a high-stakes narrative when Christine Smith (Demi Moore) steals one of Corvette’s designs.

The girl power comes into full view as the gang plots a massive heist of her entire inventory. The remaining gang members include Sade (Naomi Ackie) and Mariah (Taylour Paige). I Love Boosters will be in theaters on May 22. You can read our review from SXSW here!

Masters of the Universe

Amazon MGM

Amazon MGM released a full-length trailer for Masters of the Universe, brought to screen by director Travis Knight, known for Bumblebee (2018) and ParaNorman (2012). Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, aka He-Man. The iconic 80s toy line and comics are brought to life in the feature, where Adam is separated from his Sword of Power for 15 years.

His return from Earth to Ternia will compel him to fight an evil enemy, Skeletor (Jared Leto). For that, he needs to join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan, aka Man-at-Arms (Idris Elba).

The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 5.

Cape Fear

Apple TV

Apple TV gave us the first look at the 10-episode series adaptation, Cape Fear, written and executive-produced by Nick Antosca. The story follows Max Cady (Javier Bardem) wanting vengeance on the happily married Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson).

They both were responsible for putting the infamous killer behind bars, but Cady’s thirst for revenge is far from over. Cady’s hellishly wicked appearance will force the couple to protect their family and question whether they deserve it or not.

The series will premiere on June 5 with the first two episodes, with the remaining episodes airing every Friday until July 31, according to Deadline.

Backrooms

A24

A24 unveiled the full Backrooms trailer this week. The YouTube creator Kane Parsons takes the director’s chair with James Wan as the producer.

The creepypasta horror universe expands with stars Renate Reinsve and Chwetel Ejiofor. The trailer opens up with Ejiofor’s character standing in a strange doorway in the basement of a furniture showroom. The doorway seems to lead to endless carpeted rooms and spaces with yellow wallpaper and fluorescent lights, seemingly impossible to escape.

What’s more interesting is that the trailer incorporates the direct “found footage” aesthetics and scenes from Parsons’ original YouTube series. It gives a real 90s-style feel, adding a more realistic edge.

The film is slated for a theatrical release on May 29.

Mother Mary

A24

A24 dropped another full trailer for its upcoming film, Mother Mary, featuring Anna Hathaway in the lead role. David Lowery is behind the camera for this “psychosexual pop thriller.”

The story delves into Mother Mary (Hathaway), a troubled pop megastar who leaves her tour. She experiences an existential crisis and returns to her estranged friend, Sam (Michaela Coel), a fashion designer who once helped shape Mary’s public image.

The unsettling psychological elements are evident in the trailer as Mary asks Sam to create a new dress, and the two characters are seen entangled in their unresolved tensions.

Mother Mary is coming to theaters on April 17.

Over Your Dead Body

Independent Film Company

After two Ready or Not flicks, Samara Weaving is ready to take the lead in Independent Film Company’s Over Your Dead Body. The action-comedy, directed by Jorma Taccone, got a full red band trailer and had its curtain raised this week.

The trailer unfolds clandestine plans of a couple, whose both members have plans to kill each other. Weaving is Lisa, and Jason Segel is Dan, who take a trip to a remote cabin and turn on each other. A dangerous crew acts as a catalyst by crashing their weekend plans, leading to chaotic carnage.

Over Your Dead Body is set for a limited release on April 24.

The Breadwinner

TriStar Pictures

A full trailer of The Breadwinner also arrived this week, courtesy of TriStar Pictures. It previews comedian Nate Bargatze’s first leading film role as Nate Wilcox. Directed by Eric Appel, the story brings into focus Katie (Mandy Moore), Baegatze’s wife. She lands a deal on Shark Tank, becoming the family’s lifelong breadwinner and leaving her husband to take on the responsibilities of a stay-at-home dad.

Their kids don’t have confidence in their dad’s capabilities to do so, as one exclaims, “We’re all going to die.” Soon, after switching roles, Dad realizes that this is the hardest he has ever worked.

The Breadwinner opens on May 29 opposite Backrooms, Pressure, Tuner, and The Furious.

Beef Season 2

Netflix has officially released the trailer for the second season of Beef, which consists of eight episodes. The latest installment of Lee Sung Jin’s anthology series will begin with a Gen-Z couple watching their Millennial boss and wife have a big fight.

The newly-engaged lower-level staff members at the country club, Ashley Miller (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin Davis (Charles Melton), are caught between the souring of the relationship of their General Manager, Joshua Martin (Oscar Isaac), and his wife, Lindsay (Carey Mulligan).

Despite their problems, both couples contend for the approval of the elitist club’s billionaire owner, Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung), who herself finds grappling with the scandal regarding her second husband, Doctor Kim (Song Kang-ho).

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Hadel wrote in a social media post, “Michael and I are here to announce that Similing Friends will be ending after season three is done.”

Swapped

Netflix gave us the first look trailer of a new animated buddy comedy, Swapped, directed by Nathan Greno. This marks Michael B. Jordan’s first movie after having earned the Best Actor Academy Award, and it was a pleasant surprise watching him introduce the trailer alongside his young niece and nephew.

After a magical accident, the bodies of natural enemies in “The Valley” get exchanged. A small, furry woodland creature named Ollie (Jordan) and a green, lofty bird, Ivy (Juno Temple), are forced to work together to get their swapped bodies back.
