Kate Cobb is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and actor known for intimate, off-kilter storytelling that blends emotional authenticity with dark humor and touches of magical realism. Her second feature, BRB, a tender and darkly funny exploration of early-internet girlhood, premiered in the Breakouts program at Slamdance Film Festival 2026. Set in the era of dial-up and AIM away messages, a love-sick teenage girl and her older sister embark on a road trip to meet her online boyfriend, spiraling into chaos as secrets are revealed.
Kate recently completed production on her third feature, Collect, a found-footage dark comedy co-written with longtime collaborator and husband Kevin Bigley- which is currently in post-production. She joins Nandita Joshi to discuss her recent work.
I felt so, so much connection with that time period and with the girls. The older sister, Dylan, she’s 19, and it takes place in 2006, and I was 19 in 2006. So I identified so much with the experience of being a teenager, especially a girl during that time period, which was so specific, and I just knew it would be so fun to bring that back for everybody…I think we all remember what it’s like to be a teenager, I always am fascinated by the fact that teenagers are constantly walking this tightrope between elation and absolute misery.
The film recently had its World Premiere at the Slamdance 2026 Film Festival.
