A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was released online last night after premiering on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The sneak peek gives audiences a more in-depth look at key characters and massive set pieces, promising a scale that will surpass even Nolan’s grandest works up to this point.
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, all three of whom are featured prominently in the new trailer. Other notable cast members include Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o, among many others.
The film has already been marketed as a technical feat, boasting the use of entirely IMAX film cameras and elaborate practical effects and animatronics. The much-discussed cyclops animatronic has been a centerpiece of both trailers, and audiences get an even closer look at its full form this time. The sets are impressive in both their scale and detail, with a massive Trojan horse, fully constructed ships, and sprawling natural landscapes.
The trailer establishes Odysseus’ desire to return home to his family as the emotional drive of his journey and sets up Pattinson’s Antinous as a central antagonist. The trailer shows several scenes of Antinous confronting Telemachus and attempting to court Penelope. It gives viewers a better sense of the narrative of The Odyssey, as Odysseus fights to return home as his kingdom falls into disarray.
