The new-look President of the Cannes Film Festival Iris Knobloch unveiled on Thursday by press release the highly anticipated lineup for the 76th edition of the festival. The slate that will be featured at the Croisette looks poised to live up to Knobloch’s promise of “going back to the future of cinema” with their competition and out-of-competition selections highlighting some of the biggest names in international cinema. 

Not only does the festival’s competition lineup feature Cannes returners from the likes of Wes Anderson, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ken Loach, Todd Haynes, Nanni Moretti, and Aki Kaurismäki, but is also recommitting to screening Hollywood blockbusters out-of-competition with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City was expected to appear for its world premiere starring Anderson’s A-list ensemble. As far as other notable returners, Hirokazu Kore-eda who won the Palme d’Or in 2018 with Shoplifters is back with Monster, although little is known about the story. Ken Loach, a two-time Palme winner, will also be returning with The Old Oak, a drama exploring relevant social issues in England in relation to Syrian refugees. Nanni Moretti is another previous Palme winner who first appeared at the festival 45 years ago is bringing Il Sol Dell’Avvenire set in the circus and cinema spheres of Rome.

Wim Wenders in a surprising double bill rounds out the former Palme winners coming back to the Croisette this year. Wenders, a long-time Cannes centerpiece who won with Paris, Texas in 1984 returns to competition with Perfect Days and out-of-competition for the documentary Anselm which takes a look at German painter Anselm Keifer.

Other notable inclusions are Todd Haynes’ May December starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest (Glazer who will be making his first appearance at the festival), and Steve McQueen’s Occupied City, a documentary examining his adopted home in Amsterdam. 

Of the 19 films in-competition, only six are directed by women, an all-time high for the festival that has long been criticized for its lack of gender parity in the selection process. Even so, Cannes still demonstrates that it has work to do to ensure an inclusive lineup.  

Running from May 16-27, the jury will be headed by Ruben Östlund (The Square, Triangle of Sadness). The selection committee’s full lineup can be seen below for Competition and Out of Competition categories, as well as Midnight Screenings, Special Screenings, and Un Certain Regard.
