Although the excitement of Barbie (2023) and Oppenheimer (2023) has settled down, there are still summer movies left on the horizon. Coming up next: old boys, more superheroes, and vampires. Otherwise known as another average August family barbeque.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (August 2)
With a fresh coat of paint and fresh direction from the unique minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this TMNT adaptation looks absolutely radical! The use of lesser-known young actors playing the titular turtles brings a fun energy that previous iterations of these characters never showed. Pull up with the squad and some pizza because this is going to be a wild sewer ride. (You can read the review now!)
The Last Voyage of The Demeter (August 11)
Based on a single fascinating chapter of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of The Demeter is a new scary story from the director of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019), André Øvredal. Since the film is set entirely on the Demeter, there’ll be nowhere to run from the iconic fanged beast. Prepare for a dark, rainy, bloody good time.
Oldboy (2003) (August 16)
Director Park Chan-wook’s breakthrough film is being rereleased into theaters this month. For anyone who has never seen this unusually amazing film, it must be seen to be believed. The less you know about this film beforehand, the better.
Blue Beetle (August 18th)
Confusing canonical changes aside, Blue Beetle is the next entry in the DC cinematic universe. This time around, director Angel Manuel Soto and the rest of the film’s creative team chose to focus on a simpler coming-of-age story; as opposed to the grand-scale adventures of other recent films from the studio. We’ve seen the unlikely hero story on more than one occasion, but Blue Beetle looks to set itself apart with its major familial themes. Will this bug crush or be crushed?
