The trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third entry in James Cameron’s sci-fi saga following Avatar (2009) and Avatar: Way of Water (2022), has officially arrived online following its theatrical debut ahead of Fantastic Four: First Steps. The film will open exclusively in theaters worldwide on December 19, 2025.

Returning to Pandora, Fire and Ash picks up after the events of The Way of Water and centers on Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family as they cope with the loss of their son Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). The trailer teases a more brutal tone, with escalating conflict and the arrival of the Ash People, a fire-adapted Na’vi tribe described by Cameron as “hardened by incredible hardship.” (People)

Leading the new tribe is Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. According to Empire, Varang will be one of the major forces driving the sequel’s darker turn, with Cameron aiming to move beyond the simple “Na’vi good, humans bad” narrative. “She will do anything for her people—even things we would consider evil,” Cameron said.

The film also introduces the Wind Traders, a nomadic Na’vi clan, and expands the world of Pandora with new creatures, regions, and spiritual complexities. According to Cameron, this third film is meant to deepen the emotional and character-driven arcs of the series rather than just deliver spectacle. Returning cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, and others.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is written by James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, from a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The trailer highlights a more emotionally intense and visually ambitious chapter, setting the stage for what Cameron has described as a larger epic that will span into Avatar 4 and 5.
