The first major sale to launch the Cannes distribution market comes from South Korean director Kim Jee-woon‘s highly anticipated period comedy-drama, Cobweb. The film, which stars Song Kang-ho (Parasite), is set to premiere in Cannes out-of-competition on May 25.
Cobweb is set in with politically divided 1970’s South Korea and tells the story of a director named Kim (Song) who is obsessed with re-shooting the ending of his recently completed film, a “Cobweb” meta film within a film. However, his plans are met with resistance from the censorship authorities and the actors and producers who don’t understand the new ending. As Kim struggles to find a way to fulfill his artistic ambitions, he is forced to confront the essence of cinema itself.
In addition to Song, Cobweb also stars Im Soo-jung, Oh Jung-se, Jeon Yeo-been, and Jung Soo-jung. The film is directed by Kim Jee-woon, who is known for his work on films such as The Good, the Bad, the Weirdand A Tale of Two Sisters.
Cobweb is the fifth collaboration between Kim Jee-woon and Song Kang-ho. Their previous films together include The Quiet Family, The Foul King, and The Age of Shadows.
The international sales for Cobweb have been handled by Seoul-based Barunson E&A. The film has already been sold to a number of territories, including Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, CIS, the Middle East, India, ex-Yugoslavia, and Worldwide Inflight.
