In Darren Aronofsky’s first film since 2017, he returns with The Whale, an adaptation of a play by Samuel D. Hunter of the same name. Starring Brendan Fraser as a reclusive English teacher suffering from grief and obesity, the film also features Hong Chau, Sadie Sink, and Samantha Morton. The Whale opened at Venice International Film Festival and is currently in theaters, so we discuss our review of the A24 distributed film, its divisive reception, and awards prospects. We then take a look at the state of the Oscar race by examining the announcements of the Critics Choice Award nominations, Academy Award shortlists, and take a look at a few new trailers including our first look at Barbie (2023).
