If you were a fan of Challengers (2024), get ready for another tennis film.

Well, table tennis, that is.

According to Variety, Timotheé Chalamet will be center stage in an upcoming A24 film, inspired by professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, titled Marty Supreme. Chalamet, whose turn as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 helped the film become the highest-grossing movie of the year thus far, will also produce the film.

With direction from Josh Safdie, who brought us Good Time (2017) and Uncut Gems (2019), this film will hopefully drip with suspense like his past features. Safdie, who is credited as the writer of the film alongside Ronald Bronstein, will be without his brother, Benny Safdie, in this outing. The duo split up creatively after Uncut Gems in order to pursue solo careers, although they still produce together through their company, Elara Pictures.

Marty Supreme is a fictionalized story, according to Variety’s report. However, the film is centered upon Reisman, who died in 2012. Reisman was a table tennis champion who started out as a hustler who would play for bets and prize money.

The film will be Josh Safdie’s first solo directorial outing since his 2008 debut The Pleasure of Being Robbed. Benny Safdie is currently directing a different A24 film, The Smashing Machine, a sports biopic that will star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as former wrestler and mixed martial artist Mark Kerr.
Marty Supreme has no timeline at the moment, although a post on A24’s official X account says the film is “coming soon.” Variety was the first to report the news of Chalamet’s involvement in the upcoming movie.
