Just over six years since Damien Chazelle‘s 2016 film La La Land featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the city of stars sung to the tune of over $470 million at the global box office, the musical that garnered 14 Oscar nominations and six wins is being brought to the Broadway stage. 

The stage show is set to be directed by Bartlett Sher (“To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Fiddler on the Roof”) and is being adapted from a book written by playwrights Ayad Akhtar and Matthew Decker. While these new contributors are being brought into the La La Land team, there will be many familiar faces from the film’s production as well including music by Justin Hurwitz, who won two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the film at the 2017 Academy Awards, and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Pasek who wrote the two nominated songs, “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream).” The cast and opening date are yet to be announced, and Damien Chazelle has not been reported to be involved. 

Marc Platt who produced the film said, “I’m thrilled to reunite with Lionsgate and the incredible team behind ‘La La Land’ to adapt the movie for the Broadway stage, the next exciting chapter in its evolution.” A concert show of the film has also been touring for the past five years.

After the widespread success of Chazelle’s hit musical, Lionsgate and the creative team hope this newest adaptation will bring the story of the aspiring actress and jazz musician who pursue their Los Angeles-set dreams to an even wider audience who can experience the story through another medium.
