The 80th Venice Film Festival finished up this past week. Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, took the top prize of Best Film at the Festival. The “playful and delirious” adult fantasy, backed by Searchlight Pictures, will campaign in most major award categories and will next play at the New York Film Festival. It is scheduled to enter theaters on December 8th.
Other top contenders were Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist and Matteo Garrone’s Lo Capitano. Hamaguchi received The Grand Jury Prize following his Oscar success with Drive My Car (2022). Garrone’s The Captain, deemed one of two major “migrant-themed” films (the other being Agnieszka Holland’s The Green Border), took home two prizes, including Best Director and Best Young Actor to Seydou Sarr.
