1. Sidney Poitier passed away

On January 6th, Actor Sidney Poitier died at the age of 94. He was the first African American to win an Academy Award for best actor and was known as the first black movie star. Poitier was known to have redefined roles for black actors by rejecting parts that were based on racial stereotypes.

2. The 2022 Golden Globes went host-less

After the LA Times released an article revealing the “ethical lapses” of the HFPA, NBC announced that it would not be airing the 2022 show. Instead, the ceremony took place privately, and winners were announced online. This sparked conversations about the validity and worth of all awards shows. The HFPA has since made reforms and will hopefully be returning in 2023.

3. Everything Everywhere All at Once was released

On March 11th, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert released one of the best films of 2022…possibly of all time.

4. Paul Dano sang “Ave Maria”

Matt Reeves’ The Batman premiered on March 4th and we have all not been the same since.

5. The “Slap”

The build-up, the reactions, the memes, the Tik Toks…I will never forget it.

6. Ariana DeBose made history by winning Best Supporting Actress

DeBose made history after winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in West Side Story (2021). She is the first openly queer woman of color to win in the category. Furthermore, DeBose is only the second Latina actress to win the category after Rita Moreno won in 1962 for the same role in the original West Side Story.

7. CODA also made history

The historic film took home Best Picture, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. CODA is the first film with a predominately deaf cast to win Picture, and Troy Kotsur is the first Deaf male actor to win an Oscar. Additionally, Hollywood legend Liza Minnelli and Oscar-winner Lady Gaga shared a tender moment on stage when they announced the Best Picture winner.

8. The Beach Scene

Top Gun: Maverick was released in May, becoming Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film. More importantly (much more importantly), Miles Teller became the summer heartthrob after everyone witnessed THIS scene.

As if Teller wasn’t enough, Aaron Taylor Johnson, in David Leitch’s Bullet Train, debuted yet ANOTHER stache for us to sweat over.

David Gordon Green debuted his final Halloween film ending the series that began in 1978.

16. The Barbie trailer dropped, and EVERYONE cared

As far as I’m concerned, cinema will be reborn on July 21, 2023.

17. Beauty and the Beast celebrated 30 years

Celebrating the film’s historic Oscar nomination, ABC put on a TV special of the classic film featuring new and old musical numbers.

18. Superman got fired

After announcing his return in October, DC executives decided they did not want Cavill in their next movie. Fans were shocked after he wrote a letter saying he would not reprise his role. This news came right after he left the Netflix show, “The Witcher,” to return as Superman. Yikes.

19. Harvey Weinstein was convicted

The former film producer was convicted on three charges of rape and sexual assault. According to Variety, he is already serving a 23-year sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York in 2020. He has been accused of sexual harassment, assault, or rape by over 100 women who have publicly come forward.

20. The “nepo-baby” article was published

On December 19th, Vulture published “the nepo-baby article,” which called out many Hollywood stars for supposedly riding their famous parent’s coattails. Many stars reacted, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Kate Hudson, and claimed that the article was nothing more than an attempt to hurt hard-working people in the industry. Many people also came to defend the stars saying that nepotism is also in finance, politics, and journalism.

21. Tom Cruise performed his most dangerous stunt to date…at 60!  

The actor called his cliff jump one of the most dangerous things he’s ever attempted after sharing the video of him on Twitter.
