During Wednesday morning’s Nintendo Direct livestream, the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) was finally released. The highly anticipated sequel finds Mario and friends blasting off on an intergalactic adventure. The livestream also unveiled a new poster for the film, which spotlights Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad gazing up at a striking star storm.

After the immense success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment, and Universal Pictures continue their creative partnership. When online rumblings began of a sequel going into development, fans were left to wonder what games would inspire this upcoming release, as there are over forty years of material to choose from.

For the first time on the big screen, Bowser Jr. and Rosalina are positioned in the trailer as major players in the sequel. Brie Larson will play Rosalina, a mysterious yet powerful character who oversees the galaxy with the help of her Lumas. The Lumas briefly appeared in The Super Mario Movie but appear to have a much more prominent role alongside the arrival of Rosalina.

Bowser Jr. will be played by Benny Safdie, who is coming off a busy 2025 with acting in Happy Gilmore 2 (2025) and directing/writing/producing The Smashing Machine (2025). Bowser Jr. is Bowser’s scrappy son who is on a mission to save his father from captivity in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Other members of the voice cast include Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Charlie Day, all reprising their roles from the previous film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will rocket into theaters in April 2026.
