After a year’s worth of hype, Wicked: For Good has earned the second biggest box office opening weekend of 2025. The film opened with $150 million domestically and $226 million globally. The only film this year to have a bigger opening was A Minecraft Movie, with approximately $162 million.
The success of this hotly anticipated sequel is also a record breaker. Not only is this the biggest opening for the stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande and for director Jon M. Chu, but it is also the biggest opening ever for a Broadway musical adaptation. The record was held by none other than Wicked, which earned $112 million upon its release.
The year has been frequently unpredictable when it came to box office performance, with many releases underperforming and rarely meeting or exceeding expectations. Wicked: For Good is a much-needed adrenaline shot for the industry, especially with juggernauts like Zootopia 2 (2025) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) on the horizon.
Here are the top five at the domestic box office according to Box Office Mojo for the weekend of November 21.
- Wicked: For Good ($150 M)
- Now You See Me: Now You Don’t ($9.1 M)
- Predator: Badlands ($6.3 M)
- The Running Man ($5.8 M)
- Rental Family ($3.3 M)
