After grossing $156 million in the US and $556 million Worldwide this weekend, Zootopia 2 has become a surprise box-office hit. For the second consecutive year, Walt Disney Animation Studios dominates the Thanksgiving weekend with an animated sequel.

Starting with the film’s opening day, Zootopia 2 made $39.5 million, already setting itself up to be a strong box office success. On Thanksgiving Day across North America, the film earned $19.7 million, second only to last year’s Moana 2, which had earned $27.8 million. The following day, the trend continued, where Zootopia 2 earned $38.5 million, just behind Moana 2, which earned, $54.5 million—one of the most successful Black Friday showings.

Overseas, the performance continued to soar above expectations with $556 million globally. That gargantuan amount puts Zootopia 2 as the biggest worldwide opening for an animated film ever, and the fourth-largest ever.

Much of the international success came from China, which contributed $272 million. The film’s box-office achievements in China also broke records, making it one of the biggest animated openings ever and one of the biggest Hollywood film debuts

Even after a nine-year break between releases, Zootopia 2 continues to carry the momentum that the original Zootopia garnered during its original release. Zootopia earned a solid $75 million during its opening weekend, but went on to become a $1 billion global hit (not adjusted for inflation).

Will the sequel soar to the heights of the original? Considering the film has already grossed half a billion dollars worldwide, Zootopia 2 can even surpass its high-achieving predecessor. Zootopia 2 has won over audiences and critics alike, earning 91% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 95% from audiences.
