Kane Parsons’ viral horror shorts are coming to life. A24 brings the upcoming sci-fi horror Backrooms, based on the same YouTube horror universe created by a then-16-year-old and one of the youngest filmmakers ever to make a movie for A24.
The teaser suggests a similar atmosphere to the YouTube series where a man narrates:
“I found something…I found a place. It’s massive in there. It just goes on and on and on. All these rooms. This place built them.”
As per Bloody Disgusting, the cast of Backrooms’ screen expansion includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.
Produced by James Wan, A24 has slated Backrooms for a theatrical release on May 29, 2026.
The plot is still under wraps, but since it draws from Parsons’ video mythology, the film is expected to follow a fictional research institute that accidentally opens a portal to a desolate, infinite dimension, unleashing catastrophic consequences.
The teaser transports us to a peculiar room centered around a lone couch. With each descent to a lower level, the couch slowly melts into the floor. Windows suddenly appear where solid walls once stood, and the door warps before vanishing entirely. A voiceover ominously insists that the space “remembers” these rooms as it constructs them. Some have described the potential plot as similar to the 2002 miniseries Rose Red, in which characters explore an abandoned house and unleash a threatening force.
