We’re in the weekend of Project Hail Mary as it’s opening successfully at the box office as the Lord and Miller directed sci-fi saga has launched to an $80 million domestic gross. It’s received an A Cinema score, 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 4.4 on Letterboxd, and a 77 Metacritic score. All the signs seem to be pointing towards not just the biggest crowd pleaser of the year, but possibly an awards contender.
That’s partially what this episode will focus on, but we’ll also take a deep dive into the relationship the Academy has had with the science fiction genre. The science fiction genre is tricky, as there’s a plethora of examples where it’s been nominated in many categories, but missed major above the line categories. But that’s what we’re focusing on today, Project Hail Mary as a possible awards contender, and the science fiction genre’s success at the Oscars throughout history.
