We all know when the TIFF account on X posts that side-eye emoji, that something is about to be announced, and this announcement is sweet like candy.
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced via press release that its 50th edition will open with the world premiere of John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds. The Opening Night Gala will take place on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at Roy Thomson Hall.
The film is a tribute to the beloved Canadian comedian John Candy, featuring never-before-seen home videos, intimate family footage, and personal accounts from friends and collaborators.
“Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy’s humour,” said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. “We love that John’s global career started in Toronto, and we can’t wait to share John Candy: I Like Me with everyone at this year’s Opening Night Gala premiere. Colin Hanks has made a hugely entertaining film packed with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but like John, this movie is all heart. For us, it’s the perfect way to kick off TIFF’s 50th edition.”
John Candy: I Like Me explores both the public and private life of the actor/comedian, known for his roles in films such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and Uncle Buck (1989). It delves into his career highs as well as personal struggles, presenting a holistic portrait of the actor as a performer, family man, and cultural icon. The film is scheduled for global release on Prime Video later this fall through Amazon MGM.
The announcement coincides with ongoing efforts by TIFF to celebrate Canadian cinema and legacy, including a special John Candy Collection in TIFF’s Film Reference Library.
TIFF 2025 runs from September 4 to 14 and is presented by Rogers Communications. Additional details about the festival program will be released in the coming weeks.
