There had been whispers about Don’t Look Up director Adam McKay’s next project since he hinted at a script he was writing during the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, but his newest project has finally been announced as the script is being shopped around studios and streamers. 

The film is titled Average Height, Average Build, and is described as part crime thriller part comedy with sociopolitical examinations akin to McKey’s latest projects with The Big Short tackling the housing crisis and Don’t Look Up investigating climate change. Also similar to many of McKay’s projects which feature ensemble A-list casts, reportedly attached are Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., Forest Whitaker, and Danielle Deadwyler with more characters to be filled.

Although McKay’s latest effort was nominated for Best Picture, but despite his critical success and all-star cast, many studios are hesitant to finance the film given budget concerns and the outlook for political comedies in today’s theatrical landscape relative to the budget McKay would demand. Even Apple, where McKay has a first-look deal, has not agreed to finance or distribute the project. 

Although a studio has yet to jump on board, McKay is planning to shoot in Boston later in the summer. In addition to the primary cast members, he has lined up talent behind the camera as well including cinematographer Todd Banhazl who has experience with McKay on his HBO series Winning Time.
