Apple Original Films is once again in the Lily Gladstone business. Variety reported Tuesday that the film division of the nearly $3 trillion company has landed the global distribution and streaming rights to Fancy Dance (2023), the drama directed by Erica Tremblay and starring Gladstone, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023.

Fancy Dance follows a Native American hustler who kidnaps her niece following the disappearance of her sister. They journey to a state powwow, hoping to reunite with their missing family member. Along the way, they unearth hidden truths about the treatment of Indigenous women in a colonized world. Isabel Deroy-Olson, Ryan Begay, Shea Whigham, Crystal Lightning, and Audrey Wasilewski also star alongside Gladstone.

The film debuted to rave reviews among critics after its premiere at Sundance in Feb. 2023, where Dubai-based film and documentary world sales agency Cercamon secured its international sales rights.

The news of Apple’s acquisition comes less than a month after the streamer racked up 13 Oscar nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) and Napoleon (2023). Killers of the Flower Moon earned ten nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Gladstone. Gladstone is a favorite to take home the award. The news also comes days after Argylle (2023), Apple’s latest $200 million release, hit theaters to poor reviews and an even worse opening weekend box office total of $18 million.

Apple plans to release Fancy Dance in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. The film is a Confluential Films and Significant Productions/AUM Group Production, produced by Tremblay, Deidre Backs, Heather Rae, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Tommy Oliver. Gladstone, Bird Runningwater, Charlotte Koh, and Forest Whitaker are executive producers.
