Another year has come and gone, but a lot of history has been made. Our team decided to compile a quick list of our favorite moments of the year. Let us know in the comments your favorites of 2023!

Angela Bassett did “the thing”

During her Oscar campaign season, the Black Panther star went viral on social media for “doing the thing.” There’s no doubt that she’s been killing it for decades, but after Ariana DeBose rapped about it, social media had a field day reminding the world that Bassett is our queen.

Everything Everywhere All at Once got the love it deserved

Speaking of the Oscars, the sci-fi-comedy-family drama extravaganza made quite an impression at the Academy Awards, winning seven Academy awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting.

Brenden Fraser made everyone cry

Of all the moments in 2023, Fraser’s Hollywood comeback brought happy tears to everyone’s eyes.

Barbenheimer

It goes without saying, but Barbenheimer changed our lives for the better. Greta Gerwig’s feminist-critique-musical-comedy and Christopher Nolan’s visually stunning biopic yielded some of the best performances, songs, scores, and crafts of the year. We cannot wait to see how both stack up as Oscar’s season inches closer.

The Barbie press tour

If I could award an Oscar for marketing, it would 100% go to the people behind the Barbie press tour. Star Margot Robbie and the rest of the cast dressed to impress at every event, even paying homage to some of the doll’s iconic looks. Not to mention, the film’s marketing expanded to a real-life dream house and various social media trends and takeovers. No one built hype like this tour.

Taylor Swift came to the movies

Love her or hate her, Taylor Swift’s Era’s Tour film did very well for an artist slowly joining the film world. After breaking box office records, the film earned a Golden Globe Nomination.

Fran Drescher’s strong voice and the historical Hollywood Strikes

In “the role of a lifetime,” Fran Drescher stepped up as a leading voice in the historic writer’s and actor’s strike. After a strike that lasted almost an entire year, it is clear that 2024 will bring a new perspective on how Hollywood CEOs act toward writers and actors.

Video Game adaptations had surprisingly great success

A baby trend is on the rise, with video game adaptations such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights At Freddy’s yielding respectable box office numbers. Super Mario Bros made over $1.3 Billion, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2023. Five Nights At Freddy’s is now Blumhouse’s highest-earning film of all time and 2023’s highest-earning horror film

…And animated films continued to have great success

Hand-drawn and a new style of animation are proving to be popular among audiences as Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron all earned rave reviews from critics and audiences.
