Seven years after its original release, Avengers: Endgame returned to movie theaters and topped the box office this weekend. The superhero event film made approximately $26 million in its wide re-release.

During its initial box office run, Avengers: Endgame became the second-highest-grossing film in box office history. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo’s massive ensemble spectacle earned $2.79 billion worldwide, nearly overtaking the reigning champion: James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) with $2.9 billion. Now, Avengers: Endgame Encore includes eight minutes of additional footage. This footage bridges the gap between the film and the hotly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, which releases on December 18.

In its second weekend, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil earned $23.3 million and a second place spot at the domestic box office. Although this amount is a 60% drop from its opening weekend, the horror comedy has still already outperformed the rest of the films in the Resident Evil franchise. 

Director David Ayer and Brad Pitt return to the top five of the domestic box office with Heart of the Beast. In this film, Pitt stars as a veteran who must traverse the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog. Heart of the Beast placed third at the box office, with a $20 million opening. 

Continuing the trend of newcomers shaking up the top five this weekend, Primetime took fourth place at the domestic box office. Directed by Lance Oppenheim and starring Robert Pattinson, the new A24 psychological crime drama made $19.1 million in its first weekend. Of the moviegoers who saw the film this weekend, a strong 69% of the audience were under 30 years old. 

Rounding out the top of the domestic box office at number five is the new DreamWorks Animation film Forgotten Island. The film earned $12.8 million over the weekend, a slow start for the critically acclaimed animated adventure. Just a couple of years ago, another DreamWorks film, The Wild Robot (2024), also started off with a quiet opening weekend. In the following weeks, the film held strong and kept making money. Given the strong reception for Forgotten Island, there’s a chance that this film follows the same path.
