The sensation of Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s You Can See Everything continues to blow far beyond expectations, nearly overtaking the much-anticipated Clayface in its opening weekend.
The newest addition to the new DC cinematic universe, Clayface explores the origins of the notorious Batman villain with gritty R-rated gory horror. The comic book adaptation topped the box office in its opening weekend, earning just over $24 million. On a $44 million budget, this box office performance won’t be setting off the same alarms that sounded for DC’s Supergirl earlier this year ($126 million box office against a $170 million budget). With an A- Cinemascore and Halloween on the horizon, Clayface has a chance to stay relevant in the box office conversation for some time. However, other titles are already hot on its heels.
In a miraculous second place, You Can See Everything continues to throw everyone for a loop in the best way. This three-hour documentary saw a 25% increase in ticket sales after expanding into more theaters nationwide, making $19.5 million. The film has become an unprecedented success, capturing the cultural zeitgeist and being one of the most lucrative documentaries in 20 years. Only $4.5 million separated the brand-new comic book horror film from the lengthy documentary about Elizabeth Holmes in its second weekend.
Laika Studios’ new stop-motion adventure Wildwood opened this weekend at number three at the domestic box office. This is a huge win for the studio and stop-motion animation as a whole, surpassing initial opening-weekend projections. The critically adored film was projected to make between $6 and $8 million, but instead soared to $12.2 million. The enthusiastic reception should help Wildwood stay near the top of the domestic box office, which Laika will need to help recoup the $100 million budget.
Street Fighter fought its way to a fourth-place finish domestically this weekend, earning approximately $8.5 million in its second weekend. This performance marks a hefty 72% loss from its opening weekend. While in fifth place, newcomer Wicker came onto the scene with a solid $5.7 million. This unique romance story stars Olivia Colman as a fisherwoman who has a basket weaver create a wicker husband for her (Alexander Skarsgård). The film garnered strong praise earlier this year at its Sundance Film Festival premiere and continues to connect with audiences with its official release, contributing to the strong performance of this low-budget movie.
