While it may not have topped the domestic box office this weekend, You Can See Everything has taken the film industry by storm.
Landing in second place in its debut weekend, the new Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder-directed documentary earned an impressive $15 million. The film has been released in only about 855 theaters across the country. This idiosyncratic exploration of Elizabeth Holmes’s life right before her incarceration garnered incredible acclaim after its surprise premiere at this year’s Telluride Film Festival. After that fateful screening, anticipation built for the release, which came just over a month later. This truncated schedule, combined with the respect Nathan Fielder has earned over the years through projects like The Rehearsal, The Curse, and Nathan For You, created a lightning-in-a-bottle circumstance that defied the weekend odds.
Fellow newcomer Street Fighter KO’d its way to $31 million in its first weekend. The Paramount video game adaptation boasts a large ensemble cast and showcases a variety of iconic characters from the franchise; however, the reception has been middling. With a B- Cinemascore and 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film doesn’t have the same enthusiasm that helped fellow video game adaptation Resident Evil earn nearly $150 million domestically.
The only returning film to land in the top five at the box office was the Jessica Chastain-led horror film, Other Mommy. Although the movie made $8.35 million over the weekend, it fell 70% from its opening last week. The film has received abysmal reviews since its release, contributing to the steep loss in box office returns.
Returning to the top five, Whalefall swallowed $8 million in its opening weekend. The film stars Austin Abrams as he fends for his life after being eaten alive by a whale. On an approximately $60 million budget, Disney and 20th Century will have to hope the engaging premise propels the film into consistent box office performances in the coming weeks.
Landing comfortably in the fifth position at the domestic box office this weekend was the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which earned $7.25 million in its debut. The romantic drama, based on Jane Austen’s classic story, is headlined by Daisy Edgar-Jones and has earned strong critical acclaim, including an A- Cinemascore and 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
