School is almost out, and the temperatures are rising! With summer just over the horizon, there’s an itching to be young. As time passes, there’s nothing like being taken back to simpler times.

Nostalgia can be bitter, but thanks to film, it can just as easily turn sweet.

Some of the best coming-of-age films are born from the ashes of the spring season, and with summer around the corner, they rise to the occasion.

Starting strong with an oldie but a goodie, Dazed and Confused (1993) takes the cake for a classic coming-of-age story reflecting on simple times. With a young star-studded cast including Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, and Parker Posey, this film transports you to the last day of school, this time in the 70s!

From underage drinking to shameless flirtation and the classic “stoner” stereotypes, this film takes the idea of letting the good times roll to a literal degree.

Another fantastic summer set film focused on young adventures and self-development is Adventureland (2009).

After graduating from college with a plan to travel through Europe, James Brennan, played by Jesse Eisenberg, sees those plans slip right between his fingers. Realizing he’ll need a summer job to get by, he ends up at a local amusement park. And amusing it is.

With another well-lined cast, Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Reynolds, and Martin Starr make it impossible to take your eyes off the screen.

This movie takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, allowing for introspection on what is important while traversing through interpersonal relationships.

On the topic of realizing and learning about oneself, Booksmart (2019) hits the mark.

Beanie Feldstein, Kaitlyn Dever, Skyler Gisondo, Billie Lourd, and Diana Silvers use their unique eccentricities to captivate viewers.

From learning there was never a need to put such stress on yourself to realizing everyone is just as smart as you, this movie is filled with laughter, joy, absurdity, and chocolate-covered strawberries. If you haven’t seen this one, bump it to the top of your watch list.

With a lovely appearance from Jason Sudeikis, how could you not want to grab some snacks and enjoy the whimsicality of youth?

If you turn to the screen for distractions, make it your television this time and watch these movies. They’ll take you back in time and may even prepare you for big life changes.
