As we all know, the work of a duo packs a powerful punch, especially when creating Hollywood movie magic.

In fact, some of Hollywood’s recent and popular titles have spawned from none other than Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig. Incredible in their own right and impressive together, the pair began their professional relationship together in 2010.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Noah Baumbach is the child of two film critics, making for an intimidating road to cinematic storytelling for the artist.

Attending Vassar College and receiving a degree in English, Baumbach found his passion for writing as well as directing. Running in the same circle as Wes Anderson, Adam Driver, and Ben Stiller, Baumbach quickly became an influential storyteller, focusing less on coming-of-age films and more so on stories of midlife crises.

Growing up in Sacramento, California, and graduating with an English and philosophy degree from Barnard College, Gerwig found a passion and niche for writing. As a credited producer, director, and writer, the majority of her accolades fall under writing, with nine titles to her name. Unlike Baumbach, her films typically focus on coming of age.

As she honed her craft for writing, she also tried her hand and face at acting. Starring in twenty-nine films, four of which Baumbach directed and eight television series, Gerwig made a name for herself with each new enigmatic character she portrayed. Similar to her acting style, her writing is profound. From her thorough character development to her realistic plots, her films make audiences feel seen and understood all too well.

Written and directed by Noah Bambauch, Greenberg (2010) starred Greta Gerwig, and from that point on they were set to establish a strong collection of dramatic, inspiring, and relatable films.

Furthermore, co-writing became the duo’s sweet spot, with Baumbach directing and Gerwig starring in the films. Gerwig’s mysterious and youthful acting style pairs well with Baumbach’s stories of finding oneself amid the pressures of everyday life.

In 2012, they co-wrote Frances Ha, with Gerwig starring as the main character and Baumbach as the director. Gerwig’s character is faced with growing up, a bit too late that is. As a New Yorker looking to enjoy life despite the stress that comes along with it, Frances teaches us the importance of loving ourselves above much else.

Following their co-writing in 2012, the duo co-wrote Mistress America (2015) with Gerwig as the main character and Baumbach as the director once again. Like they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”  Similar to Frances Ha, this film follows the lonesome life of a college student as she blooms into an adventurer.

Highly anticipated and worth the wait, Noah Baumbach wrote and directed White Noise, debuting in December of 2022. Based on the 1985 novel by Don DeLillo, the film adaptation follows the fears of a middle-aged couple and how their worries bring them closer to one another. Greta Gerwig stars alongside another frequent face of Baumbach’s films: Adam Driver. With a stellar cast and a strong story, the magic between Baumbach and Gerwig shines bright in this film.

Finally, with Barbie on the horizon and set to release in July of 2023, moviegoers will have a chance to see Gerwig and Baumbach’s writing come to life at the hands of Gerwig and her artistic vision.

With notable films under each of their belts, one child and another on the way, the duo continues to create striking cinematic pieces that leave audiences wanting more.
