Zach Cregger has brought another powerful frightfest to the big screen. Resident Evil has earned approximately $60 million domestically, topping its first weekend chart. This new iteration of the famed video game series follows Austin Abrams as a medical courier who is frightfully ill-equipped to handle the mutated horrors that infest Raccoon City.

The film, which originally was tracking to earn between $40 and $50 million this past weekend, benefited from strong initial reviews and admiration for Cregger as a modern horror auteur. His first film, Barbarian (2022), made ten times its budget over its theatrical run (over $40 million on a $4.5 million budget). Cregger followed up that success with the even more successful Weapons (2025). Along with earning a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for Amy Madigan, Weapons made $151 million at the domestic box office, soaring past its $38 million budget. 

Resident Evil also rose to the top of the box office weekend thanks to the popularity of its source material. The “Resident Evil” video games are no stranger to big-screen adaptations. Since Resident Evil (2002), seven feature films have been based on the acclaimed games. Before this new film, however, the highest opening for a Resident Evil movie was Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) with $26 million. The 2026 iteration breaks the franchise record by almost $35 million, not including an additional $48.3 million made internationally. 

In second place, Practical Magic 2 continues to earn a place at the top of the domestic box office even after falling short of projections in its debut last weekend. The Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman sequel made $12 million dollars, bringing its current domestic box office total to just over $50 million. 

Just below Practical Magic 2, Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains the biggest film of 2026. In its eighth weekend, the superhero spectacle brought in $6.5 million, adding to its $944.5 million domestic box office total. The film has surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) as the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office ever. 

Rounding out the top five domestically this weekend, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues its ten-week-long journey at the domestic box office while Coyote vs. Acme continues to smash through all prior expectations. With both films reaching over $4 million this past weekend, the remnants of an impressive summer at the movies continue to permeate into the fall.
