There is arguably no month more hyped this year than July. Three massive films will be coming to the biggest screens all across the world. They are among the most anticipated movies of the year, for us here at The Rolling Tape and for film fans all over the world. The numbert of memes these titles have generated already should be telling enough, but it’s time to introduce the films that could make July 2023 one of the best months at the theater in a long time!
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
The seventh film in the Mission: Impossible franchise is looking to be the most dangerous yet. Both are dangerous for the characters in the film and for the actors playing in it! It can be hard to discern whether or not Tom Cruise is just using these films to do unimaginable stunts for his own amusement. No matter what the case may be, these films have only gotten better as time has gone on. And with a stacked cast of old favorites and exciting new faces, this mission is shaping up to be one I’d happily choose to accept.
Oppenheimer
Few filmmakers working today command respect like Christopher Nolan. He is an undeniable presence in the entertainment landscape, whether you like him or not. With Oppenheimer, this could be his most ambitious project to date. This film feels like the perfect fusion of two things that he’s always been very interested in: World War 2 (see the fantastic film Dunkirk(2017)for more on that), and technological innovation (in this case, technology destroys life as we know it). Just like with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, so many incredible actors have assembled the cast of this film. With all those elements combined, this is sure to be an explosive addition to the summer movie season!
Barbie
To round out the highly anticipated double feature, Barbie will be hitting the marquee shelves on the same day as Oppenheimer. Based on the marketing materials, however, this couldn’t be two more different films, which is what makes them such an exciting double. Greta Gerwig’s rise has been nothing short of fascinating. Her previous two films, Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019) have cemented her as one of the best active filmmakers today, which makes her choice to make the Barbie movie all the more intriguing. We’re very excited to see what kind of spin she puts on the classic plastic icon.
Talk to Me
To cap off this stacked month of movies is a Sundance Film Festival 2023 horror film that left many viewers talking about its premiere. Talk to Me is the debut film for directing brothers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, revolving around a group of friends who become hooked on using a severed hand to conjure spirits. Will this first feature be too much style over substance, or will this peer pressure/drug addiction allegory give us a deeper firstHAND experience?
