After six weeks of superhero domination, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been dethroned at the top of the domestic box office by newcomer Practical Magic 2

The sequel to Practical Magic (1998) continues the story of sisters Sally and Gillian, played once again by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, respectively. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also reprise their roles from the original. Alongside these mainstays, Maisie Williams and Joey King join the main cast as Sally’s daughters Kylie and Antonia.

Although the film earned first place domestically, it still fell short of initial box office projections. After expecting to achieve a $40 million debut this weekend, Practical Magic 2 instead went on to earn approximately $30 million. The magic potion of nostalgia and star power that made other films this year — like The Devil Wears Prada 2 — so successful was not as strong here.

Even after being bumped from the first slot at the domestic box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to barrel along in second place. The Spidey sensation made $8.4 million in the US this past weekend, bringing its domestic total alone to over $935 million. For another week, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is not far behind. The second major Tom Holland-starring film of the summer came away with $7.4 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $600.5 million.

In fourth place, the new Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson action comedy Runner joins the box office charts. The film opened this weekend and made $6.4 million, an underperformance given the scale of its release. The film has received an unenthusiastic reception from critics, but it received an A- from Cinemascore

Rounding out the top five at the domestic box office this weekend is Coyote vs. Acme. The little Looney Tune that could continues to make solid business at the box office, bringing in $4.1 million on its third weekend in theaters. With that, the domestic total for the animation-live-action hybrid has reached $45.6 million.
