20th Century Studios released the first trailer for Scott Cooper’s music biopic about Bruce Springsteen, Deliver Me From Nowhere, showcasing Jeremy Allen White singing his heart out as the eponymous rock singer.
The film is described as chronicling the conception and recording of Springsteen’s sixth album, Nebraska, released in 1982. We see Springsteen humming the initial sounds for Nebraska inside an apartment with Paul Walter Hauser, as we hear voiceover narration of Springsteen’s manager and producer, Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong), insisting to a frustrated David Krumholtz that “these are the songs he wants to work on.”
Landau details Springsteen’s troubled childhood, as black-and-white flashback scenes show a young Bruce troubled by his irate father, Douglas Springsteen (Stephen Graham), contrasting scenes of Springsteen sharing scenes with a love interest (Odessa Young), and recording Nebraska. The trailer culminates in Springsteen’s performance of “Born to Run” in front of a rock crowd.
Based on Warren Zanes‘ 2023 biography Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, written by Cooper, the film will focus on the period of Nebraska’s creation, as Springsteen opted to pivot to more darker, somber themes detailing failed dreams of blue-collar workers (often cops and criminals) and their existensial crises in searching for meaning.
Deliver Me From Nowhere will release on October 24th, as it’s expected to garner the support and acclaim of previous music biopics. In the last three years, A Complete Unknown (2024), Maestro (2023), and Elvis (2022) have garnered a total of twenty-three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and six acting nominations, but no wins; Deliver Me From Nowhere hopes to change that fact. Cooper is no stranger to music dramas, as his directorial debut, Crazy Heart (2009), won Best Actor for Jeff Bridges.
